First Aid & Medical Help
Basic guidance on how to treat minor injuries and prevent diseases during and after a flood.
Treating Minor Cuts & Scrapes
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water (or hand sanitizer). Clean the wound with bottled or boiled water. Apply an antibiotic ointment and cover with a sterile bandage to prevent infection from floodwater.
Preventing Insect Bites
Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes that can carry diseases. Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and socks. Use insect repellents containing DEET to protect yourself.
Preventing Waterborne Diseases
Never drink or swallow floodwater. If you feel sick, experience diarrhea, or vomiting after exposure to floodwater, seek medical attention immediately. Keep contaminated objects away from your mouth.
Managing Chronic Conditions
Keep a supply of essential medications in your emergency kit. If you lose your medication or it gets wet, contact a pharmacy or emergency medical shelter immediately for replacements.
Recognizing Infection
If a wound becomes red, swollen, painful, or warm to the touch, it may be infected. Seek medical help as soon as possible, as floodwater infections can be severe.
Helping Others
Provide comfort and emotional support. If someone is seriously injured or unconscious, do not move them unless they are in immediate danger. Call emergency services right away.
